Starwood Hotels, which owns nine hotel brands including the W, Aloft and the St. Regis has created the first app that lets you check into your hotel room with your smartphone. Not only will you save time waiting in line when you arrive but the app will also unlock the door to your hotel sleeping room.
To use the keyless app, you have to sign up for Starwood’s Preferred Guest program. You book your room on the app and then hours before you check in you’ll be sent a notification with your room number.
According to Mark Vondrasek, Senior VP, Starwood Hotels, having a passcode on your phone makes it virtually impossible for someone to get access to your room number.
Note: the app is currently only available in select locations with more to be added.

Technology brings its own challenges to any scenario but the SPG Keyless is a great example of upping the customer experience.
I have personally utilized internet airline check-ins, hotel kiosk check-ins, and recently enjoyed the ease of simply waiving the keycard to unlock my sleeping room door. And the decrease in time spent and frustration wasted did greatly increase my customer experience.
However, I am not sold on trading my cell phone data security for this app convenience. My concerns may be unwarranted but if I have them – so will others. Data safety fears will be one major hurdle Starwood Hotels will need to overcome.
I look forward to following the SPG Keyless app journey.
